Coverages Available

Coverage A: Dwelling

This coverage protects the physical structure of your home, including the foundation, walls, and roof. It covers damages from a range of perils such as fire, storms, and other risks named in the policy. It's important that the coverage limit of this section is enough to cover the cost of rebuilding the home in the event it is completely destroyed.

Coverage B: Other Structures

Coverage B pertains to structures on your property that are not attached to your house, such as detached garages, sheds, and fences. Like dwelling coverage, this protects against damages from specified perils listed in the policy. The typical coverage amount is usually 10% of the dwelling coverage but can be increased if needed.

Coverage C: Personal Property

This section covers the homeowner's belongings, including furniture, clothing, and electronics, whether they are on the property or temporarily away from it. Coverage C can be offered on a named perils basis (covering only those perils listed in the policy) or an open perils basis (covering all perils unless specifically excluded). Homeowners may need to purchase additional coverage for high-value items such as jewelry or art.

Coverage D: Loss of Use/Additional Living Expenses

If your home is damaged due to an insured disaster and becomes uninhabitable, this coverage helps pay for living expenses incurred while your home is being repaired. This can include costs for hotel stays, meals, and other necessary expenses above your usual living costs.

Coverage E: Personal Liability

This coverage protects homeowners if they are legally responsible for someone else's injuries or property damage. Personal liability coverage can cover legal costs as well as court awards up to the limit of the policy.

Coverage F: Medical Payments to Others

This part of the policy provides coverage for medical expenses if someone is injured on your property, regardless of who is at fault. Coverage F is generally limited to smaller amounts and is intended to prevent a lawsuit for minor injuries.

Additional Coverages and Endorsements

Homeowners can also opt for additional coverages and endorsements that extend or increase coverage limits. Common endorsements include coverage floods, which are typically excluded from standard policies, and enhanced coverage limits for specific items. Each section of a home insurance policy plays a vital role in ensuring comprehensive protection for homeowners. It's essential for homeowners to understand these coverages and evaluate their needs to ensure their policy provides the protection they require.
